Anandayana’s approach to a zero-waste run is both innovative and effective. With over 1,000 participants joining the 10 km and 5 km runs, the event leaves no ecological footprint. Unlike other running events that rely on disposable items like plastic bottles, Anandayana prioritises
By eliminating single-use plastics and encouraging the use of reusable materials, Anandayana sets a benchmark for other events. The involvement of the plogging community underscores the importance of these practices. “From an environmental perspective, the Indian Ploggers Army always partners and plogs with others,” Raj said. “The plogging community always encourages zero waste gatherings, especially at running events where the dynamics vary from regular household gatherings.”
The absence of prizes and the focus on fun and fitness rather than competition also reflect a shift towards more holistic and community-focused values. “There are no prizes for the event as it’s not a race but more of a fun run,” Raj noted.
A volunteer added, “The zero waste initiative highlights the importance and feasibility of sustainable event management. It demonstrates that with thoughtful planning and community support, large events can be both enjoyable and environmentally responsible.”
